I was blessed to be part of another birth on December 30th, 2008! The wonderful Rogers family waited patiently for their little girl to arrive, but she decided momma's tummy was where she wanted to stay. Due to Kim's gestational diabetes she was scheduled to be induced on the 30th so I arrived at the hospital that morning to assist them through the day. It was a beautiful day surrounded by family and friends
. Kim labored beautifully and was able to rest once she got her epidural. She was so excited to have this option to remain comfortable and calm throughout the labor. The room was filled with laughter and anticipation as the day went on. Kim progressed quickly and her baby girl was born at 5:04 p.m. Faith Cara Joy Rogers was born very healthy and weighed 8 lbs 8 oz and 22 1/2 inches long. Kim did great throughout the whole labor and is doing well at home with her baby girl and toddler son, Noah.I wanted to comment on the fact that this is a very different reality for Kim, as her first labor and delivery with her son Noah were all natural and she had the Bradley birth she wanted. However, the labor was so intense and she was overwhelmed by the speed of her labor she was hit with a surge of hormones that sent her into postpartum depression. She didn't understand why she was feeling so overwhelmed and didn't even know what PPD was until Noah was 5 months old and she read a book about it. Once Kim and her family began to piece together what was happening to her she got help and was able to move forward and really enjoy being Noah's mother. She got involved in a postpartum support group and now assists other mothers in helping them through the struggle of PPD. I have included a link to a great organization called Post Partum Support International (www.postpartum.net) and hope you will pass the information on to others if necessary. As for Kim and her family, I know she is enjoying settling in with her two beautiful children and loving husband. There is no sign of PPD in sight and they are looking forward to watching their children grow in the new year ahead!
I was so honored to be part of this birth and learned a lot as a doula. There is a time and place for everything in labor and this labor was a beautiful example of how easy an induction can be for both the mother and baby. There were medical interventions involved and I believe this was a textbook example of how working with a skilled medical staff can make my job so easy. I was able to focus on Kim and take care of whatever she needed. She was so comfortable physically and emotionally she was laughing and telling jokes throughout the day. I am also looking forward to helping them with postpartum care in the next few months and watching the whole family blossom! I love being a doula and it is families like this that make it even better!
